What is personal style blogging?
Trust you all blessed.
Last week I had an unexpected experience (if I may call it so), that has prompted me to write this post. This is not gonna be the usual outfit post.
What is personal style blogging?
Ok, to my experience story lol, when I did the previous post, as usual of me I begged, cried, forced, threatened and manipulated (yes oo I do all that…. ha-ha) people to go and read and to even tell friends and family about it. When I did most people replied in the affirmative (shoutouts to everyone that helped a sister out), initially the response was good (got more email sign-ups than any other day), but within an hour or two they came back asking what and how they should respond to people when they ask what my site is about. To say I was shocked would be an understatement. WHAT!!! cos to me you should get a fair idea of what it is if you’ve gone via it – my first reply was to tell them that its a personal style blog, the next message was “what does that mean”; so to break it down I told them to say its a fashion blog, that was no better, which was surprising cos in my mind its fashion which we all know plus a blog so to me it will be a blog that is about fashion! Simple right? Still got them confused, so during a lunch break I was sharing my frustrations with a friend and she was like “why don’t you write about it, as in a blogpost to explain what a personal style blog is all about”.
So here i’m today, gonna try my possible best to explain what a style blog is, and mind you everything i’m about to explain is what I think it is, so my opinion may differ from other’s.
But before I do that, I recently realized that blogging is still relatively new in Africa especially Ghana. Whiles bloggers in the western world are hitting it big, lots and loads of people here are yet to hear of style blogging let alone know what it is…
The funny thing with this whole situation is that there are a few “famous” people in Ghana who are style bloggers but they are not known as such. Some of them are Empress Jamila of stylebytrey.com ,Priscilla of prissyville.com, Afua Rida styledbyrida.com and Violet of akosuavee.com , the irony is that whiles all these ladies have “style bloggers” and link to their blogs in their Instagram bios, none of them are described as that amongst all their numerous titles.
I was advertising myself in a shoe shop the other day to some ladies and the first thing one of them asked was “do we even have fashion bloggers in Ghana?” so I asked her If she knows any of the ladies listed above and she was like “i follow all of them on Instagram!”
Another instance is how lots of people mistake me for a model on Instagram all because of my outfits and professionally taken pics, even though I have it pasted in my bio that I’m a style blogger. Tired of re-explaining myself, I resorted to sending them links to my blog to go check it out thinking that will help, they still come back with no idea what it means even after going via all the posts.
Now let’s dig in…
Personal style blogs are highly personal, honest and sometimes unedited images of a persons day to day lifestyle generally from a low-budget wardrobe – which is something that is relate-able and attainable to most people.
Style blogs differ from person to person cos it about the bloggers unique perspective, its kinda like a personal dairy where the blogger provides information about what they are wearing, where they bought it, why they bought it, how much it cost etc which is a great way to engage your readers. They are very much subjective, there are no hard and fast rules, you just do what you like!
Personal style blogs focus more on style/fashion advice, featuring “how to…“-type articles for the lay reader. They are posts discussing clothing fit, the matching and complementing of colors and other general knowledge on clothes wearing and care along with prescriptive advice on adhering to fashion dos and don’ts.
Since they are always giving readers ideas they could use in their own lives, its no surprise most style bloggers transition to personal stylists as well because they tend to enjoy experimenting a lot with outfits. They end up helping clients style their outfits for events and photo shoots, personally shop for them or sift through their current wardrobes, offering them advice on how to style their clothes and accessories and given them various outfit ideas, makeovers and personal style consultation for various events, agenda and beyond.
This is the little I know about personal style blogging and as I explained earlier this is MY own opinion. Hope this enlightens you and if you know of someone who hasn’t heard of the term, do refer them to this post.
Take aways– Style blogging to me is the only avenue that offers an opportunity to express yourself explicitly via clothes.
